Redefining Trondheim’s Cultural Heart

Developed by Nonspace, the visual identity for Nye Hjorten Theatre enhances Trondheim’s cultural scene with a bold and attractive design system. It captures the spirit of 19th-century variety theatre while incorporating a modern, lively branding approach.

The design agency needed to create an identity that would fit various performances, such as musicals, stand-up comedy, lectures, and classic dramas. They aimed to maintain a consistent brand presence. Nonspace accomplished this with a flexible identity system that features two structured identity boxes. These boxes create a negative space ‘H’ as a visual stage for creative expression.

Typography is central to the theatre’s identity. The system lets each production use its own font, so every show looks different but still feels part of the same brand. The main typefaces, Isola and Isola Mono, in both backslanted and slanted styles, give the brand a spacious look.

The logo system playfully combines stylised tragedy and comedy masks with the unique Trøndersk moustache. Inspired by the theatre’s exterior, a bold red colour scheme establishes the theatre as Trondheim’s cultural heart.
