That’s what I call flexibility! A variable font is almost as agile as Lee Celledoni.
In 2021, I invested an extensive amount of time in publishing all my typefaces anew as a variable font.
Variable fonts are particularly interesting for web design, which demands flexibility.
Content on the internet has to work on variable formats, from a desktop computer to a smartphone. A typeface that is variable comes in handy.
On the web, typefaces have to be loaded from a server, and this needs to be quick.
One font file is faster than various fonts.
Since all my typefaces are available as a variable font, I had the urge to use only variable fonts on my site.
Now, all the typefaces you see on every page are loaded as a variable font.
Every individual font style, such as Bold or Light Italic, is defined via the CSS font‑variation‑settings.
This way, the site is lightning fast and renders perfectly on every screen and size.
Every individual font weight is displayed via CSS font‑variation‑settings.
Two font requests, one for upright and one for italic (total of 455kB), can display 256 font weights of Spezia.
This way of web design is particularly interesting for editorial needs.
Every text category can be managed via the CSS variable font setting.
In that sense, the new Luzi Type website is a proof of concept.
I am curious to see more web typography built on variable fonts.
I hope you enjoy the new website.
A big thank you to Róbert Mészáros for helping me with the backend!
