That’s what I call flexibility! A variable font is almost as agile as Lee Celledoni.
In 2021, I spent a lot of time republishing all my typefaces as variable fonts.
Variable fonts are great for web design because they offer flexibility. Content on the internet needs to work across different formats, from desktop computers to smartphones. A variable typeface makes this easier.
Web fonts need to be loaded from a server quickly. One font file is faster than multiple font files.
Since all my typefaces are now available as variable fonts, I decided to use only variable fonts on my site.
Now, all the typefaces you see on each page are loaded as variable fonts.
Each style, such as Bold or Light Italic, is defined using the CSS font-variation-settings property. This makes the site very fast and ensures it looks great on any screen size.
Every individual font weight is displayed via CSS font‑variation‑settings.
Two font requests, one for upright and one for italic (total of 455kB), can display 256 font weights of Spezia.
This approach to web design is handy for editorial purposes. You can control each text category through the CSS variable font setting.
In this way, the new Luzi Type website serves as a proof-of-concept. I look forward to seeing more web typography that uses variable fonts.
